Automatic Access Control and Traffic Management System in Ferry Harbours

At the end of 2016, Hansab supplied contemporary access control system based on number identification together with traffic management automation solution to Virtsu, Kuivastu, Rohuküla and Heltermaa harbors.
Drivers who have previously purchased ticket and marked their vehicle registration number correctly on the ticket can pass the ticket control using automatic number identification. Vehicle number is detected on the move which significantly reduces the waiting time behind the barrier and thereby increases the capacity of the cashier lanes.
In addition to the number identification the height of the vehicles is measured using special laser measuring devices. The data obtained from the number identification and height measurement is automatically forwarded to the harbor management system, to check the validity of the ticket and the barrier will be opened.
In the port area, the drivers are informed by LED screens which share information related to the departures and guide road users on cashier lanes.
Parallel to the number indentification automatic ticket kiosks can be used which read the bar code from the ticket or mobile phone screen and allow to enter to code manually also.
To guide the vehicles, the automation solution is used that manages the barriers and guarantees that hazardous incidents will not happen on the movement area.
During the project, following solutions and software integrations were delivered:
- Automatic number identification – identification of vehicle registration numbers with special cameras and integration with harbor management systems,
- Automatic measurements – laser-based management system and software integration with harbor management systems,
- Barriers and traffic lights management – automatic controllers were supplied together with special software,
- LED displays – guiding and informing LED screens with special software. For managing the displays, the integration with harbor management software was executed,
- Cash register system with software integration – ticket machines with card payment solution. Cash register software was integrated with the harbor’s online ticket system,
- Self-service kiosks – self-service kiosks and kiosk management software, the integration with harbor’s ticket and management system
The feedback from users has been very positive, people like the convenience and speed the new solution offers.
